A modular system offers clients many advantages and a great deal of flexibility, but it also means significantly more effort during development. My personal takeaway from this project is the realization that we need to ask ourselves whether our clients actually need this level of flexibility in the long run—or whether we might all benefit more from static page structures in the future, as they allow for faster workflows and help our clients save on budget.

Offering a variety of information in a clear and structured way
KommMit commissioned us to create a new website for them.
This project presented us with three major challenges:
While the old website had hardly any content or information, the new one was meant to showcase everything kommMit.eu has to offer. We needed a concept to present a large amount of information in a clear and structured way. A project like this makes it difficult to prioritize topics or programs—simply because everything is important: every piece of content, every target audience.
The website had to work without using any photographs.
No WordPress. They needed a different CMS that matched their technical requirements and that they could manage and maintain themselves.

The Concept: Bringing Order to Chaos
Even just the fact that kommMit.eu addresses two distinct target groups posed the challenge of crafting two forms of communication. Add to that the wide range of support offerings and the need to convey all content in a clear and accessible way. Together with KommMit, we redefined and restructured the site. This ensured that all relevant content would be included, and we used our expertise to bring everything into a meaningful form.
The Design: A Clear Visual Identity
Visual breaks are nearly indispensable online. Since we weren’t using photographs, we needed other ways to create visual contrast. We focused on three key design elements:
Bold use of color,
Expressive typography,
Charming illustrations.
This resulted in a bold, attention-grabbing website. The illustrations lighten up the tone of the content, making it more approachable. When selecting colors, we played with complementary tones—a simple way to create something striking. The color palette was derived from their existing logo, which also served as a design anchor for the new website.

KommMit is a center that supports refugees and those working in the field across Berlin and Brandenburg through a wide-ranging program. Their services include legal and asylum counseling, psychological support, assistance with finding housing, and a variety of workshops.
The Tech: Modular Freedom with DatoCMS and NextJS
The new website also brought with it many new features, such as a donation form, a calendar, and an interactive map. The map helps users quickly see where events and services are taking place and where KommMit’s partner organizations are located.
KommMit also needed a new CMS to manage their site’s content. For us, this was a clear case for DatoCMS. It integrates seamlessly with our stack of NextJS, React, and GraphQL. It allows us to build fast, modern components tailored to our client’s needs. Reusable content blocks that the client can fill out intuitively, a consistent visual structure across the site, and simple multilingual support are just a few of DatoCMS’s many advantages.
On top of that, KommMit, as an NGO, benefits from DatoCMS’s commitment to social impact. They receive fast and ongoing support for any issues, and DatoCMS offers generous free tiers—especially for organizations and individuals with vision but limited resources. Thanks to open and appreciative communication, DatoCMS even provided the professional version free of charge for KommMit.
KommMit now operates with a website that isn’t slowed down by unnecessary baggage or vulnerable to common security risks. After a brief onboarding, they can fully manage the CMS independently. The modular approach gives them maximum flexibility in terms of content and structure.

Conclusion: Turning Up the Volume for KommMit.eu
KommMit.eu is a project that brings about change—and absolutely deserves to be seen. We’re proud to have supported them with our expertise. When it comes to projects and organizations that provide real value to our society, numbers come second for us.
That’s why we’ve created the farbenmeer Nonprofit Discount specifically for NGOs and charitable initiatives.
